The owner of the Unreal game engine, Epic Games, founded in 1991, recently got famous with their game Fortnite. Epic Games, which earns huge amounts of money from this game, received a very important investment. The 1.25-billion-dollar investment attracted attention.
Epic Games is estimated to have a value of 15 billion dollars, while Epic Games' s investors include KKR & Co., Vulcan Capital, Kleiner Perkins, and an e-sports company called aXiomatic which received and investment by Michael Jordan.
The current CEO of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney, is also the founder of the company. Sweeney, who holds the majority of the shares, still pulls the strings. However, in 2012, 40 percent of the company was bought by Chinese internet giant Tencent. Now, new investors will be a minority shareholder next to Tencent.
Epic Games is backed by a serious license from its own game engine Unreal Engine, which is a tool to connect players to games in many different styles. In addition to having a serious audience in Fornite and e-sports, Epic Games also earns serious money through the game and organizes tournaments with millions of dollars of rewards. With the inclusion of a Fortnite version of Monopoly, as well as additional revenues such as the launch of the game's characters clothing, Epic Games has become a serious mint.
